After getting a comment about this today I thought I’d better create a post and quick video tutorial which shows the difference between the menu options with Genesis 1.6 and previous versions. In my previous post I showed you how to create custom menus (which came out with WordPress 3.0) and how to position them or have them show up in either the Primary Navigation or the Secondary Navigation.
With Genesis 1.6 you will have to create a custom menu- then all you need to do is decide where you want it to show up (100% custom menu support). Which makes a ton of sense and eliminates the need to exclude pages or hide pages (if you were using Genesis before, you could still do this with custom menus OR exclude pages in in the navigation options).
Before I show you how to do the menus- here area couple of the other updates in version 1.6 of Genesis:
Footer Widgets: this one is HUGE (well, to me anyways!). I love using footer widgets and not all of the child themes come with footer widgets. There’s now an easy way to add them to your child theme if you don’t have them. You can check out the instructions on the StudioPress blog. I’ll be working on a video of that soon too!
Custom Header: the same is true for this option. Some of the child themes come with an option under ‘Appearance’ to just upload a new header (and set the dimensions). If you’re not sure how change this with your hosting, then you can follow these instructions here- also from the StudioPress blog. Stay tuned for a video with this tip as well!
SO- with that out of the way- here is the video on the custom menu options for Genesis 1.6. Leave your comments and feel free to share or re-tweet!
